The 5th Day Experience

Frequently Asked Questions

The Fifth Day Experience is an opportunity to transform our students’ learning experiences by restructuring the traditional school calendar to include 15 consecutive four-day weeks (Monday – Thursday) beginning Friday, February 7, 2020 – May 15, 2020. The Fifth Day Experience applies to high school students who attend Butler Tech’s high school campuses (Fairfield Township, Monroe, West Chester).

These Fridays are not mandatory school days. Instead, they allow our students to pursue personalized experiences determined by their own voice and choice. The overall goal of the Fifth Day Experience is to enhance students’ education and growth through freedom and flexibility based on their interests, needs, and ambitions, ultimately creating highly competitive graduates

No, Fridays (2/7/2020 – 5/15/2020) are not mandatory school days. However, we recommend students take advantage of the day in a way that allows them personal growth and development through new experiences.

While opportunities and experiences are limitless, below are the four main categories for Fifth Day Experiences:

External – students may set up their own Fifth Day Experience such as working a part-time job, volunteering, etc.

Internal – Butler Tech will provide supervised opportunities at no cost* to all students through online registration. These choices are determined by student feedback and demand. Some internal programs may not run if too few students register to attend.

*Exception -Students wishing to register for driver’s education will be charged directly by the company.

Stay at home – because Fridays (2/7/2020 – 5/15/2020) are not mandatory school days, students may choose to stay home. However, we recommend students take advantage of the day in a way that allows them personal growth and development through new experiences.

Mix-and-Match – students may choose to spend their Fifth Day Experience participating in a mixture of the first three options. They may determine each week what they wish to do with their upcoming Fifth Day Experience.

External Fifth Day Experiences:

Students participating in an individualized External Fifth Day Experience (co-op, internship, job shadow, etc.) must access their own transportation.

Internal Fifth Day Experiences:

Internal options arranged by Butler Tech will occur during regular school hours with sessions from 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Normal bus transportation will be provided to and from Butler Tech for bus riders.

**Exception: April 10, 2020, no transportation will be available due to the closure of all associate schools in order to observe the Good Friday holiday.**

Student drivers may drive themselves to the Butler Tech campus.

If the students’ internal option is not a full-day experience:

  1. Bus riders must register for both a morning and afternoon session. Otherwise, the student must have the required parent permission to leave.
  2. Student drivers may arrive at the time of their scheduled on campus experience and leave once their Internal Fifth Day Experience is complete.

Yes. Attendance will be taken and parents/guardians will be contacted if a student is absent from the Internal Fifth Day Experience they registered to attend.

Students will register for their Fifth Day Experience through the Fifth Day Experience website at FDE/butlertech.org. All students will register their intent for Fifth Day Experience including External, Internal and Stay at Home options.

Breakfast and lunch will be available on campus for all students who have registered for an Internal Fifth Day Experience. Normal prices will apply including free/reduced status.

Students attending a field trip off campus (i.e. college visit, industry tour, etc.) should pack a sack lunch.

Students will log their Fifth Day Experience from the previous Friday through their online Schoology account. This gives the student a record of acquired experiences, credits, certifications, etc. This record of experiences can be used on their resume, scholarship applications, etc. Otherwise, because Friday’s are not mandatory school days, the data collected will be used to drive future programming and overall Fifth Day Experience research and reporting.

AM Session:  8:30 AM – 10:30 AM

PM Session:  11:30AM – 1:30 PM

Full Day Session:  8:30 AM – 1:30 PM

External Fifth Day Experiences:

Students participating in an individualized External Fifth Day Experience (co-op, internship, job shadow, etc.) must access their own transportation.  Therefore, you will not be affected by calamity delays or closures at your home school or Butler Tech campus.

Internal Fifth Day Experiences:

Internal Fifth Day Experiences (occurring ON Butler Tech campuses) will occur ON TIME regardless of individual home-school calamity delays or closures.  Internal Fifth Day Experiences will only cancel if the calamity (weather, building issue, etc.) causes the entire Butler Tech district to close.

Internal Fifth Day Experiences (leaving FROM Butler Tech campuses: i.e. college/industry tours) will leave ON TIME regardless of individual home-school calamity days or closures. This means that if your home school in on a delay AND you are a bus rider – you will be unable to attend your planned Fifth Day Experience trip.
